Ring Shout

Trying a new format to see if this will works better when I post directly on here. In my continued effort to figure myself out with this blog, I’m hoping this will be a nicer look.

Now, GoodReads has these reading challenges and when you read a qualifying book, you get a virtual bookmark. Kindle has the same in app and sometimes they share similar lists of books. This wasn’t one of them, but it was a great pick for a book I don’t own.

Ring Shout takes place around 1920, after slavery was over but blacks were still considered the lesser class compared to The Klan. Don’t let the description fool you. It’s a fantasy/ paranormal/ horror book with plenty of wtf gore and nightmare fuel in it that also hits home with how things ring true even today.

The key takeaway is that Hate is the fuel. Hate is what made things come to be when added to those that already have a pre-existing concept in their head.

Was this a hard book to read?
Yes. It was placed in a time where Black people were treated as less than human and whites held their heads high like they were the superior race. Even though this is fiction, it’s from a place in our history as a country.

The take on that time period with this book was really well done. There’s a scene where there’s a metaphor about feeding that hate and if you read this, you will see what I mean. I want to tell, but then it would be spoiling the book and I can’t do that. I found this to be a great book for the month of October as we approach Halloween. An eerie take on American history.

This is a quick read (less than 200 pages) and if you have Kindle Unlimited, you can read this for free. Otherwise, check with your local library to see if they carry this. It came out in 2020, so you should be able to find this or just request it.
