Please excuse the appearance of my book. Battle scars from transit. I am so glad I got to read this. It is so dark and not your typical historical fiction or vampire tale. If you’re hoping to read some romanization, this ain’t it.
Markus Redmond wrote, what I feel, an on point portrayal of what it was like for the slaves that were brought to this country. The brutal life they lived that many try to hide or deny. And the way this story’s vampire was tied to legends passed through the tribes was well done. I’ve never read anything like it.
And this was a hard read. The abuse of the slaves and the ugliness of the white people in how they thought about them was dark. I’ve always known from history how they were treated and yet, reading from a slaves POV made it harder. I have no regrets in reading this. I think it’s refreshing to read something so visceral.
Thank you to Kensington Creator HQ and Erewhon Books for the gifted e-copy. This hardcover was paid for with my own money before I even joined this team.
