Put two people from two different backgrounds and have an age gap between them and you have a recipe for workplace drama. Riko is an assistant manager for Pegasus Books and has worked her way up to that position for a few years now. She’s in her 40s and single but takes pride in her work. Aki is in her mid twenties coming from a well to do family. She’s brash and never takes into consideration who might hear her outburst. She became a member of the full time staff at Pegasus through family connections and so Riko resents that she’s been allowed to continue to work there.
This book is a fascinating take on workplace culture, where the differences in age, gender, and what you know could affect your relationship with your coworkers. Also, because this is taking place in Japan, that, too, is an aspect being presented to me, an American. Definitely one for any contemporary literary fiction fan full of conflict and insight on situations seen at the characters home versus when they’re at the workplace. And as I’m leaning more into my contemporary fiction moods, this was very much welcomed.
